This occurs in Gym battles when the Pokemon’s HP turns zero. At this state, the Pokemon will not be able to fight unless the player revives it.

Revive can be used on the Pokemon for it to recover from fainting. If normal revives are used, potions are needed to fully recover the lost HP. The trainer can also use Max Revive to revive and fully recover the Pokemon’s HP. When the Pokemon has fully recovered, it is now ready for another Gym battle.

If the Pokemon is a Gym defender, it could faint a number of times before it is automatically sent back to its trainer.
