Pokemon has been a staple of childhood entertainment globally for decades. Whether you watched the television series, played the handheld or console video games, read the manga, or had the trading card games, then chances are that you’ve heard the highly recognizable name Pokemon before. And when it comes to Pokemon, there is no monster more recognized, or more loved, than Pikachu.

With the release of Pokemon Go, thousands of aspiring trainers are out in the world, eyes glued to their devices, searching high and low for a Pikachu that they can call their own. Little do they know that this is a way for you to start the game with Pikachu as your starter Pokemon.

Like many Pokemon games before, Pokemon Go provides a short tutorial on the ins-and-outs of the world of Pokemon and at the end provides the trainer with his choice of three Pokemon. In Pokemon Go, these monsters are Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander; their types, respectively, water, grass, and fire. Pokemon Go, like it’s predecessor Pokemon Yellow, breaks the mold by also allowing Pikachu as a starter.

Pikachu can be chosen if the player walks away from the three starters that their in-game avatar is surrounded with. After walking for a little while, the time and distance may vary from device to device, the player, ignoring the other starters, then a wild Pikachu will appear and you can catch it.

Voila--you now have started Pokemon Go with your very own Pikachu.
