A new player would start at Level 1. A player can level up by going to PokeStops, capturing Pokemons, hatching eggs, evolving Pokemons, and battling or training at Gyms.
As the player levels up, he can now encounter stronger Pokemons with higher CP and rarity. These strong Pokemons are needed to be able to conquer Gyms. Reaching higher levels would also give rewards like Incense, Lucky Egg, Egg Incubator, Berries and Pokeballs. To add to that, higher levels would also give you access to better Potions, Revives and better balls for catching like Great Ball and Ultra Ball.
