Pokémon Go is, by design, a game that motivates the user to go outside and walk between different locations. You’ll find new Pokémon, Pokéstops and Gyms scattered throughout your general area, but if currently you are not able to move around and need to stay at home, there are still some actions you can take to enjoy the game.

Incense

The first one is the use of incense. This is available at Pokéstops, when the player level’s up, and you can also buy them at the app’s store. Incense, when used, will attract nearby Pokémon to you for 30 minutes, reducing the need to move around. The incense is available in the items bag, and when used it’s represented in-game by a circulating pink cloud around the user’s avatar. You should expect 6 or 7 Pokémon per session of incense. Also, keep in mind that the type of creatures that come to you depends on your real-life environment, so don’t expect all of the different Pokémon to show up at your home, for example [1; 2; 3].

Lure Module

The second option is the use of a Lure Module. These can be acquired the same way as incense, but their use is a bit different. They will also attract Pokémon, but Lures can only be deployed in Pokéstops. They also differentiate from incense because they will attract Pokémon to all of the players around a specific Pokéstop. Again, Lures have a time-limit of 30 minutes. You can identify if a Pokéstop has a Lure Module or not by checking the game’s map screen. If the Pokéstop symbol has falling petals, then it currently possesses an active lure. The Lure Module will only be a viable option if there is one near the place that you are. If there is, then you can take full advantage of it and attract a lot of Pokémon without going outside [1; 2; 3; 4; 5].

Hacking

There is another option, but not a legitimate one. It’s a hack that tricks the phone GPS, allowing you to travel in-game while staying indoors. This can be done both in Android devices as well as iPhones. Root or jailbreak are required and you should take note that, if detected, your account could be banned. Niantic has been known to ban users who cheated in their previous game, Ingress. If you still want to use this tweak, you can find links to step-by-step guides in the sources [6; 7; 8; 9].

Conclusion

Finally, if you are indoors, leave the game app running. Even without any incense or lures used, from time to time Pokémon will show up [2]. Remember that problems with servers will affect incense use. If you are in the middle of an incense session and you lose connection with the server, the incense will also be lost.

Pokémon Go is certainly at its best when you can walk around to different locations and engage with another players. The social aspect of the game has been praised by many players as an essential aspect of it, but if you still want to remain indoors, or are unable to leave, you can use the techniques listed above to increase your chances of finding Pokémon.
