Eggs are randomly obtained from interacting with PokeStops. Place the Eggs in Egg Incubators to hatch them. Eggs will hatch after you've walked a certain distance.
Each Incubator holds only 1 egg.
A rule of thumb concerning eggs is that eggs with a longer distance typically give you rarer Pokemon.
Eggs don’t track distance when you’re moving too fast (above ± 20 km per hour), so driving around in a car isn’t a clever method to hatch out eggs. Now if you go over that speed a notification pops up that says Pokemon Go should not be played while driving. If you wish to continue playing you must click the I am a passanger button. Please, for your own safety, don't click the I'm a passanger button if you are driving
I would recommend using the long distance eggs, 10km preferably or else 5km if you don’t have 10km, in the incubator that has limited use. This way you get the most out of the "breakable incubator".
- Note that you cannot receive eggs if you have full inventory. Even though your Egg bag may have empty slots left, Eggs are awarded from PokeStops as Items. So you must have empty Item space to be awarded Eggs.
Mechanics For Hatching Eggs
- Distance is calculated only in straight lines.
- The server pings your GPS every so often and calculates the distance since your last ping. If you walk a small loop and the server pings you for the second time after you have reached yourl starting point, you will get zero distance on your eggs.
- My phone is pinged every 4 minutes. It is quite consistent at the 4 minute mark. I know people have been saying 1-2 minutes, but that is not the case for me. It may vary person to person, I can't be sure, but it is 4 minutes for my phone as well as 2 of my friends phones I tested. If you want to test for yourself, open your app, check your distance, walk at least .1km to be sure, and keep opening and closing your window until the distance has changed. Make sure to do that a few times to make sure it's consistent.
- Speed limit: So this is where I think I might be the most helpful. The general consensus is that the speed limit is between 10-20km/h (6.2-12.4m/h). What I have found is that there are actually 2 speed limits:
- The first speed limit: the first speed limit is the actual speed limit. I have found it to be roughly 10km/h (6.2m/h). What I mean by "actual" speed limit, is that this is the speed that if you maintained it in a straight line forever, you should continue to accumulate distance on your eggs per each ping, which comes out to somewhere between .6km & .7km (.37miles & .43miles) per ping every 4 minutes.
- Now the second speed limit is the fastest you can go while still collecting distance on your eggs. I have found that speed limit to be roughly 25km/h (15.5m/h).
- IVs of Pokemon hatched from eggs are determined when you spin the PokeStop, not when the egg hatches.
- The Level of your Pokemon hatched is the same as the level of your trainer when you first acquire the egg, up to trainer level 20.
- Obtaining an egg when your trainer is level 10, the egg will hatch into a level 10 Pokemon even if you leveled up.
- Due to the level cap, even if you found the egg at trainer level 30, the egg will hatch into a level 20 Pokemon.
